Workplace Skills Plans 2019 – Are you ready?

As I am sure you are aware all Workplace Skills Plans (WSP) need to be submitted by 30 April 2019 and the question is, will you be ready? I recently had a discussion with a small business that was not aware last year that they needed to follow this process in order to attain the Skills Development Element points on their B-BBEE scorecard. As a result, they completely missed out on these points and this negatively affected their business performance. Are you aware that there can be major implications on your B-BBEE rating and chances on applying for future funding by not submitting?

The next question that I wanted to discuss in a bit more detail is; to what extent digital and online learning will be featuring in your WSP for the coming year in an effort to drive the business performance that you need to achieve?

I have had a number of discussions with clients in the last year where they have expressed their feeling that in today’s world, digital learning has become increasingly important as time away from the office has an even more significant impact than in the past.

In the 2017 Deloitte Global Human Capital Trends, Deloitte indicated how the workforce is changing, becoming more digital, global, diverse, automation-savvy, and social media proficient. At the same time, business expectations, needs, and demands are evolving faster than ever before. This presents a massive opportunity to gain a competitive advantage where digital can increasingly enable learning and development.

We then discussed how they can incorporate accredited digital learning into their Workplace Skills Plan (WSP) for the coming year, and the possibility of blending it with non- accredited company learning to create a bespoke learning experience, tailored to their environment. Through this they could ensure that they maximise their recognised B-BBEE Skills Development spend as well as still deliver a quality learning experience to their staff.

 

Below I have explored the key elements of the scorecard and how online learning can be incorporated into learning plans.

In today’s economy business are faced with many challenges; balancing the training needs of the business, the requirements of the B-BBEE scorecard in terms of skills spend and meeting the profit targets promised, all the while ensuring that staff are appropriately skilled to ensure performance. Many organisations believe that only face to face training interventions can be recognised as Category B, C or D courses within the B-BBEE Skills Development Element. This means that to maximise their training spend only out-of-office training is done, with Learnerships and the other credit bearing short courses being the preferred options. Training managers often report that line managers are reluctant to release staff for training interventions citing the disruption to the operations as the main reason. In the end both parties suffer, staff don’t get the training they need to enhance performance and the business misses out on the opportunity to maximise training spend.
